The whole swimming pool is already buzzing with the sound of the various students who have arrived for the party. Despite the fact that I'm standing in a room decorated with blow-up palm trees with tinsel dripping from the leaves, and dozens of inflatable baubles, I almost can't believe that we're actually having a Christmas Pool Party.
"I'm not sure I've ever witnessed something so Christmas-like, and so un-seasonal at the same time," Fiona says from her spot next to me, echoing my thoughts on the matter.
I let out an amused laugh. "You're not wrong. It's an acquired taste."
"That's Georgie for you."
A snort escapes without me meaning it to. "She's just determined to make sure everyone has fun."
"Us included," Fiona responds.
I shrug. "She means well. And the party turned out great." I have to admit that while it feels strange to be celebrating this way, the atmosphere is good, and it's clear that the people already here are having a good time.
My phone buzzes in my pocket and I pull it out, a wide grin spreading over my face when I see the message from Josh.
< I'm here, though I don't know where I'm supposed to come. >
"I'll be back," I say to Fiona, jumping to my feet and already hurrying towards the entrance.
I step outside and find Josh waiting under one of the lights. I wave to get his attention. Even from this distance, I can see his whole face light up as I approach. I shove my phone back into my pocket, knowing that I need my hands free now. Besides, he's here, I don't need it anymore.
"Hi," I sign quickly.
"Hi."
"Are you ready to come inside?"
He nods.
"Is there anything I need to know before we go in?" I ask. "I mean for making sure we can communicate."
He shakes his head. "Same as normal. You need to get my attention, and you need to look directly at me when you want to say something."
I nod. "Got it." I pause, realising there's one more thing I need to check. I should have done it earlier but somehow, I completely forgot. "You can swim, right?"
He lets out an amused laugh. "I can swim."
Relief floods through me. That could have been something that could be a problem going forward, though I suppose he could always still learn.
"Are you not cold?" he asks, gesturing to the admittedly thin long shirt I'm wearing over my bikini.
"A little, but it's warm inside." Admittedly, I hadn't thought about how little I had on. It's normal for merfolk to walk around like this in the winter, especially when they were going in and out of somewhere with water.
"That makes sense."
"Shall we go in?" I gesture for us to head inside.
He smiles and falls into step beside me. It feels strange not to take his hand in mine given the way I feel about him, but it's better if I don't so we can still communicate properly. I imagine those things will come in time. Or we'll develop our own version.
